Dreamers 04:04
All of you restless American dreamers, hold on to the hopeful day When the sound of our laughter, will break like the dawn of a new day, The dawn of a new day, dawn, of a new day, dawn of a new day On all those hateful faces. The sound of our laughter and song, will break like the dawn of a new day, On all those hateful faces. I can’t wait to see it? Can you? All you restless American dreamers, hold on to the hopeful day, When the sound of our laughter and song, will break like the dawn of a new day, break like the dawn of a new day, on all those hateful faces. What a illogical parade of state fair festivities, we will be. We’ll strut around with artichokes and beets and rutabegas, and all kinds of, all kinds of colored broccoli. The sound of our laughter and songs, will break like the dawn of a new day, On all those hateful faces Let me get something straight with you. Let’s communicate. Baby you, give it to me, tell me what you want, tell me what you need baby Tell me how you want to be loved. Tell me how you want to be loved. Cuz I only want to love you, the way, that you want to be. All of you restless American dreamers, hold on to the hopeful day, When the sound of our laughter, will break like the dawn of a new day, Will break like the dawn of a new day, On all those hateful faces.

Clouds 03:25
Oh the clouds burned so bright, on the way. We could imagine our dreams, well coming true up there, sometime Coming true up there, sometime. So we sat in the cool shade, of the ruins, Let the sound of single-prop planes remind us of the sun, They reminded us, of the sun. (Repeat this verse) So we carried our joy home, Returned to our rhustling worship under domes of dreaming lids Under domes of dreaming lids. So we carried, our joy, home. We carried, our joy, home. (repeat) And so you’ve got to learn to live with the hunger, not the cure. (repeat line) Oh the grass it grows, but it sleeps in Winter, on the year’s other shore On the year’s other shore.

Kitelines 03:22
How did you keep your head when you found out about it? Who did you lean on where did you turn? How did you keep your head when you found out about it? What did you learn? What did you learn? How did you keep your head when you found out about it? Who did you speak with and where did you stand? How did you keep your head when you found out about it? Where will we land? Where will we land? Well if you stick with me I'll lead you through every season Through all the storms and the wars and the changing of the tides Well if you think that the wind is empty, is empty, well You're not listening to the singing of the kite lines Singing of the kite lines, singing of the kite lines Sometimes I feel drunk on the tears that I’ve never cried Though I’ve never tried very hard Sometimes I think I know where the line is Between the mind and the heart Do you know what I mean? Do you know, what I mean? Sometimes I feel most alone, when I’m surrounded by the ones, that I love Sometimes I feel most at home, when I’m, singing out, to a room full of strangers Full of strangers, full of strangers, full of strangers How did you keep your head when you found out about it? The emperor's clothes they're layin’ on the throne How did you keep your head when you found out about it? You know you're not alone, not alone

Hibiscus 05:16
Hibiscus (lyrics taken from an old folk song) Well all you young, and tender ladies Careful how, you court young men They’re like a star, like a star on a summer’s morning First appear, and then they’re gone They’re gone, they’re gone They’ll tell you, some lovin’ story They’ll tell you, some far flung lie Then they’ll go, and they’ll court another For that girl, they’ll pass you by Pass you by, pass you by They’ll pass you by They’ll pass you by Was May 20th, corner of 33rd and Krona St On the south side, of the town Where I was growin’ up Crooked and scaled Too much, oil in my veins And there she was, there she was… My teenage dream, my teenage dream, my teenage dream, my teenage dream... Well all you young, and tender ladies Careful how, you court young men They’re like a star, on a summer’s morning First appear, and then they’re gone They’re gone I wish I was, some little sparrow I had wings, I'd fly so high I'd fly away to where my hearts true lover sat And when they's talkin', I'd be by But as I am, no little sparrow Ain't got wings, so I can't fly I'll hide away in some lonesome valley Weep and pass my troubles by Well all you young, and tender ladies Careful how, you court young men They’re like a star, like a star on a summer’s morning First appear, and then they’re gone They’re gone, they’re gone

Buskin' 03:26
Buskin’ my way from Seattle down to New Orleans. Everyday, a tidal wave of joy, and disappointment, I knew If I started on that road, there’d be ups and downs. Well you could be afraid, but maybe you should be amazed At the sound of life all around you. Hashtags and spectacles, which team are you joining? Is it he, is me, is she, is it they, it it them, And which team do you think they need more of? If you start on down that road there’ll be ups and downs. Well you could be afraid, but maybe you should just be amazed At the sound of life all around you. (repeat from Well you…) Well the sound, of life all around you, the sound, of life, all around you. (repeat) Well I’m buskin’ my way from Seattle down to New Orleans. Everyday, a tidal wave of joy, and disappointment, I knew If I started on that road, there’d be ups and downs. Well you could be afraid, but maybe you should be amazed At the sound of life all around you. (repeat from Well you…)

Karryn 04:58
Some people, they learn early, that they like to wander, wander. Keep their eyes, high, on the horizon line. Keep on movin’, through space. They’ll be the first ones, to remind you, That you can’t go back in time. You can’t go back in time. (repeat line) No… Some mornings, some mornings they’ll wake you troubled, troubled, troubled, troubled. Tears from the bad dreams, still on the pillow from your face. Go to the window, go, all you see are clouds the shape of worry, worry Worry, that you can’t erase. But you got to rise, you got to rise, you got to rise up singing, And go about your day. Cuz you know sometimes, sometimes, sometimes a cloudy morning brings forth a pleasant day If the moon on the waters, was a sound, well you know that it would be My momma’s voice, she was layin’ me down My momma’s voice, she was layin me down Down down, down down, layin me down. Oh when she was layin me down. I still remember, my momma Layin me down, she used sing to me

about

Make - Believe was born in the soft late evening light of May 20th. Some of the six songs here were well established, others new. Several of them squirmed in my hands that night; changes or improvisations purely of the moment. The seed of something much more textured and complex was planted, as evidenced by the stunning work of the other musicians. John Metzler, at Quiet Please Studios in Greenwood, was vital to the process along with the vintage analog equipment he carefully curates. We room-recorded directly to Ampex 2" reel tape, then digitized in order to make editing easier. This is a deeply personal project. I come from a musical family, and was thrilled to bring my niece Rachel and my dad (J.D.) into the studio. I asked a talented former student of mine for the wonderfully engaging drawings. There are many small, quietly magical surprises to be found in these recordings. Listen carefully.
